Vermont corrections officials say a woman jailed on an attempted-murder charge put feces into the cell of Evi Quaid, wife of actor Randy Quaid.
The spat involved Veronica Lewis, 31, of Worcester and Evi Quaid, 52, at the Chittenden Regional Correctional Facility in South Burlington on Sunday, officials said.
Michael Touchette, the Corrections Department’s director of facilities, said Tuesday the two women had no physical contact, and Quaid was in her cell. He said Lewis used a food chute into Quaid’s cell to toss human excrement.
The incident was at least the second involving Lewis in recent weeks at the prison.
Corrections Commissioner Lisa Menard did not respond to multiple messages about the case.
Chittenden County State’s Attorney T.J. Donovan said he was aware of the incident, which remains under investigation.
Vermont State Police said they were notified Monday by Corrections about the altercation. Police are consulting with the Donovan’s office to determine if the case rises to the level of a criminal violation.
The Quaids were intercepted Friday evening at the West Berkshire port of entry by U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents as the couple tried to re-enter the county from Canada, officials said.
They are jailed for lack of $500,000 bail each as fugitives from justice in California. They have been wanted there since 2010 on a felony charge of vandalism, and misdemeanor counts of unauthorized entry into a dwelling and failing to appear in court while out on bail, records show. Evi Quaid also faces an additional count of obstructing police.
Lewis has denied a charge of attempted first-degree murder of Darryl Montague, 48, of Westford after Vermont State Police said she shot the firearms instructor three times June 29.
