The “Find My iPhone” application helped police catch a robbery suspect in Hermitage.
According to an affidavit, David Smith was arrested early Monday morning after he allegedly stole a woman’s purse from her shopping cart from the Kroger shopping center at Andrew Jackson Way and Old Hickory Boulevard.
Melanie Mundy was loading groceries into her car on Sunday when a black Chevrolet Yukon pulled by as someone inside the vehicle grabbed her purse.
The 66-year-old woman and two time cancer survivor realized what was happening and also reached for it, holding on and being dragged, the report stated.
Mundy fell down, breaking her arm. She also sustained bruises and scrapes all over her body and may have to undergo surgery for her broken arm.
Mundy told News 2 she believes the suspect was watching her in the parking lot prior to the incident.
“I think he was looking for someone that would be easy prey,” she told News 2.
Detectives were able to get a suspect and vehicle description from the victim, witnesses and store surveillance video, according to the report.
The victim’s iPhone was in her purse and officers asked her to use the “Find My iPhone” app and see if it was still on.
The application showed her phone was at the Avalon Apartments in the 3500 block of Andrew Jackson Way in Hermitage.
Officers went to the apartments and reportedly saw a man and a vehicle matching the description of those involved in the robbery.
