The Texas man accused in the death of a woman whose body was found dumped along a Butts County road in 1999 appeared in court Monday to hear the charges read against him.
Fuquah Dewalt Cashaw, 44, is charged with kidnapping and murder in the death of Heather Danielle Davidson.
Davidson, of Stockbridge, was 22 when her body was found along Kermit Williams Road. Investigators said she had been strangled.
Butts County Sheriff Gary Long on Sunday announced the arrest in the case that is now more than 15 years old but had recently gotten a fresh look from investigators. One of Davidson’s roommates was initially charged in the case but according to published reports, a Butts County grand jury declined to issue an indictment. Long said thanks to newer DNA technology and exhaustive case work, investigators are now confident Cashaw is responsible.

Long said Cashaw was working as a fabricator at a welding shop in Pearland, Texas, prior to his arrest. He said Cashaw was arrested at work by officers of the U.S. Marshals Service Feb. 17 and waived extradition proceedings.
Cashaw has been held in the Butts County Jail since late Friday night.
