Authorities say a 78-year-old man has died in Gastonia more than two months after he was severely beaten with a cinder block.
Investigators said Fletcher Campbell died Saturday morning in hospice care after appearing to improve for weeks after the July 6 beating in Gastonia.

Police charged 19-year-old Donald Wallace with attempted first-degree murder after the beating. Prosecutors say they will review Campbell’s medical records and determine if additional charges should be filed.
Friends say Campbell would cash his Social Security check and stay in hotels until the money ran out, then go to a local homeless shelter.
