New Orleans police have arrested a suspect accused of shooting a medical student who stopped a woman’s apparent kidnapping.
Police and federal marshals apprehended 21-year-old Euric Cain at a house late Monday morning. He was wanted on charges of armed robbery, second-degree kidnapping and attempted first-degree murder in Friday’s shooting of Tulane University medical student Peter Gold.
Meanwhile, Tulane officials say the fourth-year student continues to improve but remains in guarded condition Monday.
‘The Gold family is very grateful to the doctors and other medical professionals at University Medical Center who are providing such excellent care for Peter,’ Tulane spokesman Mike Strecker said in a statement. ‘We again ask that everyone respect our family’s need for privacy during this difficult time.’
Police believe Cain is the man seen in a disturbing surveillance video dragging a woman toward an SUV before shooting Gold, 25, in the abdomen when he intervened, ABC News reported.
On Sunday, New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu issued a warning telling the gunman they were going to find him and that he would spend the rest of his life behind bars.
‘We’re going to find you, we’re going to prosecute you and you’re going to spend the rest of your life behind bars,’ the mayor said.
Officials also warned that anyone sheltering Cain will be taken into custody and a $12,500 reward has been offered for information.
At around 11am local time Monday, New Orleans police and US Marshals descended on a home in the 2200 block of Delechaise Street and arrested Cain.
During a press conference held Monday afternoon, police spokesman Tyler Gamble revealed that Cain has given investigators a full confession following his arrest, reported the station WWLTV.
An unnamed woman was also taken into custody at the same time.
Police said Cain had landed behind bars earlier this month during a carjacking for possession of a stolen cellphone.
The top cop in New Orleans has commended Gold who was committing an extremely ‘selfless act’ when he intervened after seeing the woman being dragged early Friday.
