Bowie Richard was shot and killed outside of a bar after the nights successful performance.

It was supposed to be a celebration. Terrytown husband and father Bowie Richard, a rapper/songwriter known by the stage name”Yung Kaptin” was out with friends early Saturday morning (Jan. 18) to toast the night’s successful performance.

No one expected the night to end with Richard, 21, shot dead following a heated exchange with a man inside The Edge Sports Bar & Daiquiris,2151 Lapalco Blvd., Harvey. Stunned relatives said his death wasn’t motivated by drugs or troublemaking. It was an unimaginably senseless murder that began as a quarrel with a stranger.

“It has nothing to do with any of that,” Richard’s mother, Tammy Duhon, 44, said Sunday afternoon. “He was just out celebrating.”

Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office detectives have identified the gunman as Devin Bonilla, 24, of Marrero. He is wanted on a warrant for second-degree murder, said Col. John Fortunato, spokesman for the department.

Bonilla was still at large as of Sunday evening (Jan. 19). He was last seen leaving the bar in a dark-colored, four-door 2001 Ford F-150. The pick-up truck had a Louisiana license plate with the number B850460.

Relatives said they’ve been told Bonilla was not the person who argued with Richard at The Edge. Witnesses told family members and friends that Bonilla had accompanied another unidentified man, the stranger who tangled with Richard at the bar.

On Sunday, those closest to Richard tried to sort out the night’s events while poring over photos and remembering his life. Relatives described Richard as an outgoing, loving family man.

“I just want people to know he what a good father and a good husband he was,” said his wife, Justine Richard, 24.

Richard was born and raised on the West Bank, the fourth of seven siblings in blended families, Duhon said. He and twin brother, Brandon Richard, were so alike but so different. Relatives called them mirror images because of their opposites: Brandon was right-handed; Bowie, left-handed.

“If one was being really good, the other was getting into trouble, and then they would reverse,” Duhon said.

Lawrence “L.J.” Richard, 47, the boys’ father, said the two were harmlessly mischievous, stepping as close to the line as possible without crossing over. “He was a good boy,” Lawrence Richard said.

Bowie Richard always loved to be the center of attention. Entertainment seemed to be in his blood. He and brother, Brandon, were fans of the old black-and-white “Our Gang” short films, also known as “The Little Rascals.”

“They would sing all the songs,” Duhon said.

By age 13, Bowie Richard’s lyrical talents for poetry, rapping and songwriting began to emerge. He eventually took the name “Yung Kaptin” and performed with other local artists, sometimes collectively known as “The Take Off Plane Gang,” friends said. He performed at some large-scale venues including The New Orleans House of Blues, The Howlin’ Wolf and Eiffel Society on St. Charles Avenue.

“He was electrifying,” said Richard’s stepmother, Annie Richard, 47.

Music was his passion. But Lawrence Richard said his son was also worked as a radiographer’s assistant and had his eye on becoming a certified industrial X-Ray technician.

Richard met Justine while she was working in the office of his Terrytown apartment complex. Though he liked to tell people she came on to him, relatives confirmed Richard spotted her and fell hard.

“He came over one night, and he never left,” Justine Richard said.

True to form, Richard took center stage to propose in front of friends and family during the half time of a New Orleans Saints party in 2011. The two married on June 8, 2012. Richard leaves behind a 4-year-old stepson and a 2-year-old daughter whose blond hair and bright blue eyes make her his spitting image.

“He was a great son,” Duhon said. “I couldn’t have asked for anything better. Watching him grow into a young man and become a father was amazing.”

Lawrence Richard said he just wants to spend one minute with the man who gunned down his son. “Not to beat him up,” he assured. “I just want to ask him, ‘Why? Why would you pull the trigger on such a good kid?'”
