A Grant County judge sentenced a 26-year-old man to 50 years in prison and 18 years of supervised release for robbing, kidnapping and killing a Platteville taxi driver in June 2014.
In November, Timmy Johnson, Jr. pleaded no contest to first degree reckless homicide, armed robbery with use of force, and kidnapping.
The criminal complaint said Johnson admitted to killing 79-year-old Merle Forbes. Police said Johnson stabbed Forbes multiple times and put him in the trunk of the car. He drove to La Crosse and led police on a high speed chase before crashing. An autopsy report showed assault to be the cause of death.
Johnson’s attorney said his actions were a result of undertreated mental illness, and that he meant to kill himself, not anyone else.
But prosecutors say Johnson’s 30 prior convictions demonstrate a pattern of dangerous behavior.
