In a white city, it’s not normal for a man to get gunned down while standing outside a bar.
But in a 40%+ black city, it’s a surprisingly common occurrence – and no one seems to know why.

A man was shot and killed while standing on the patio of a popular bar in east Charlotte Saturday night.
This happened at Smokey Joe’s Cafe on Monroe Road.
Detectives were able to identify the victim as 47-year-old John Michael Songer.
On Sunday, officers charged 35-year-old Jamie Lord Harris with murder and possession of a firearm by convicted felon.
During the course of their investigation, detectives identified Harris as the suspect and obtained warrants for his arrest.
Harris was located and arrested without incident. He was then transferred to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office.
