North Korea Conducts Another Successful Missile Test

North Korea conducted another missile test yesterday. It appears as if their capabilities are improving with each successive launch.

Reuters:

North Korea said it successfully tested a powerful new intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) on Wednesday that put the entire U.S. mainland within range of its nuclear weapons.

North Korea’s first missile test since mid-September came a week after U.S. President Donald Trump put North Korea back on a U.S. list of countries it says support terrorism, allowing it to impose more sanctions.

North Korea, which also conducted its sixth and largest nuclear test in September, has fired dozens of ballistic missiles tests under its leader, Kim Jong Un, in defiance of international sanctions. The latest test was the highest and longest any North Korean missile had flown, landing in the sea near Japan.

South Korea responded with a missile test of their own.

It’s hard to say what happens next. It’s obvious that North Korea is not going to stop their nuclear program and is not going to stop conducting missile tests. They have no incentive to stop these initiatives. After all, they are the main tools in their arsenal to deter an invasion.

Trump’s recent trip to Asia was partially meant to consolidate support in the region and further isolate North Korea. The key to dealing with North Korea has always been through China but it’s unknown how much they’re really trying to help with the situation. China as they have become a greater economic force is seeking to project its influence further in the region. North Korea has been useful in keeping the United States off balance and this helps them pursue their geopolitical aims.

Hopefully cooler heads will prevail and some type of diplomacy can resolve this. Quite honestly though, we have enough problems here in the United States and throughout the West. The last thing we need is to be involved in a war on the Korean peninsula.

Maybe Trump should give Dennis Rodman another shot at figuring this out?
