43-year-old Quisi Bryan of Cleveland was a notorious killer when he was sent to prison 14 years ago, but according to Cuyahoga County prosecutors, DNA testing of evidence from cold case rape investigations, has also identified Bryan as a serial rapist.
Bryan, who earlier pleaded guilty to charges related to four of the old rape cases, is representing himself as he stands trial for the March, 1994 kidnapping and rape of a fifth victim at knifepoint.
During jury selection on Monday, a shackled Bryan stood up and told prospective jurors, “I am Hamid Wadid, probably better known as Quisi Bryan, and I thank you for being here for this case.”
Even though Bryan is already on death row for the June 2000 shooting death of Cleveland Police Officer Wayne Leon, prosecutors say they are obligated to seek justice on behalf of the rape victim.
Assistant Prosecutor Jeff Schnatter told FOX 8, “She has lived with it for 20 years, and I’m sure it’s haunted her. Each crime is distinct, and each crime calls for justice.”
Patrolman Leon was shot to death outside a Cleveland gas station after he pulled Quisi Bryan over for having an altered license tag.
Bryan testified at his trial in November 2000, that he shot Officer Leon because he was afraid the officer would learn that he was wanted for a parole violation.
Investigators now speculate that Bryan may have had another motive for killing Wayne Leon, the fear that police would learn about his serial sex crimes.
But the jury that will consider the evidence in the 1994 rape case, may never find out about Bryan’s convictions for killing Patrolman Leon, and assaulting the other four rape victims. “Unless he opens the door somehow to it, unless he creates an opening, brings it up, they won’t find out about it unless he testifies and then his past criminal history goes to his credibility,” said Schnatter.
The jury that will hear the rape case was seated on Monday, and Quisi Bryan is scheduled to deliver his opening statement on Tuesday.
