NYT: Trump was Planning to Attack Iran Thursday, Called It Off At the Last Minute

Well. This is certainly troubling.

We saw the Donald Trump press conference on Thursday, where it appeared as though Trump was actively deescalating the situation. It was actually quite nice, what he said, and encouraging.

Now we have an NYT report claiming that the Potato-in-Chief had actually ordered a missile strike on Iran, and only called it off at the last minute.

I’ll just say: we’ve always got this back and forth thing with the fake news, over what is real and what isn’t. But I very seriously doubt this isn’t true. There would have been hundreds of people involved in this.

The one thing that it could actually be is yet another bluff, rather than a last minute change of heart by Trump. Otherwise, I think the report is accurate.

New York Times:

President Trump approved military strikes against Iran in retaliation for downing an American surveillance drone, but pulled back from launching them on Thursday night after a day of escalating tensions.

As late as 7 p.m., military and diplomatic officials were expecting a strike, after intense discussions and debate at the White House among the president’s top national security officials and congressional leaders, according to multiple senior administration officials involved in or briefed on the deliberations.

Officials said the president had initially approved attacks on a handful of Iranian targets, like radar and missile batteries.

The operation was underway in its early stages when it was called off, a senior administration official said. Planes were in the air and ships were in position, but no missiles had been fired when word came to stand down, the official said.

The abrupt reversal put a halt to what would have been the president’s third military action against targets in the Middle East. Mr. Trump had struck twice at targets in Syria, in 2017 and 2018.

It was not clear whether Mr. Trump simply changed his mind on the strikes or whether the administration altered course because of logistics or strategy. It was also not clear whether the attacks might still go forward.

Asked about the plans for a strike and the decision to hold back, the White House declined to comment, as did Pentagon officials. No government officials asked The New York Times to withhold the article.

That fits in with the “only pretending to be retarded” theory.

The retaliation plan was intended as a response to the shooting down of the unmanned, $130 million surveillance drone, which was struck Thursday morning by an Iranian surface-to-air missile, according to a senior administration official who was briefed on the military planning and spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss confidential plans.

The strike was set to take place just before dawn Friday in Iran to minimize risk to the Iranian military and civilians.

But military officials received word a short time later that the strike was off, at least temporarily.

The possibility of a retaliatory strike hung over Washington for much of the day. Officials in both countries traded accusations about the location of the drone when it was destroyed by a surface-to-air missile launched from the Iranian coast along the Gulf of Oman.

Mr. Trump’s national security advisers split about whether to respond militarily. Senior administration officials said Secretary of State Mike Pompeo; John R. Bolton, the national security adviser; and Gina Haspel, the C.I.A. director, had favored a military response. But top Pentagon officials cautioned that such an action could result in a spiraling escalation with risks for American forces in the region.

Who knows what the hell is going on with all of this bullshit.

I don’t and won’t claim to.

I think that it is virtually impossible that there is no one surrounding Trump who is willing to tell him that if they strike Iran, Iran is going to strike back, and you will have an escalating tit for tat.

Further: understand that beyond tankers and American military targets in the Middle East, there is zero chance that Iran doesn’t have active sleeper agents inside of the US ready to hit civilian targets. That wouldn’t be part of a tit for tat, but if an actual invasion of Iran were launched, shit would start blowing up in America.

We have an open borders policy, remember. And all of that post-911 scrutiny of Moslems was replaced with political correctness during the Obama Era. I don’t think they will do a 911-style event. I think they will keep up constant pressure through quick low casualty attacks, where people either get caught or don’t. Basically, Iran could be setting off small scale attacks on soft targets every single day in America if this were escalated. No one is really talking about that. But it’s very obvious.

Iran is an Islamic state that believes God is on their side, and if they do war they are going to do total war. And if bombs are going off in malls and cars are blowing up every day in large American cities, people are going to have a lot more resentment over this war than they did with Iraq.

Short March to a Long War

If Trump was really planning to launch a strike, and then at the last minute decided not to, then did a press conference where he said it wasn’t really even a big deal, then this is just further evidence that he’s suffering from dementia and doesn’t really have any idea what is going on.

And it means that eventually, this shit is going to fall apart. Trump will break. Neocons will win. We will end up in a war.

There’s a good chance it will happen before the election.

I’m struggling to figure out how against this I actually am.

There is literally zero explanation for this war from the people trying to start it. This isn’t Iraq, where they managed to convince 75% of the population that Saddam was ready to nuke America at any moment.

This is all just “ah well, you know, there was a boat that maybe they attacked, maybe they’re terrorists, you know, all kinds of possibilities with these people.” Starting a much more serious war on so much less stable propaganda grounds is going to lead to people being very angry. And it is inevitably going to lead to Jews being blamed. There simply is not a real explanation for any of this beyond “Israel controls America’s foreign policy.”

Furthermore, it will signal the beginning of the end of American unipolar hegemony. And that is something very good for the American people. And everyone else on earth for that matter.
