Police in Jennings County continue their search for more than 40 missing weapons. One of them is the weapon they said was used to shoot and kill a man inside his gun shop.
24-Hour News 8 spoke with the victim’s ex-wife after police arrested three suspects.
Dawn Maxie said words can’t describe the pain and heartache she and her family are going through. Maxie was married to 61-year-old Scott Maxie of Jennings County. The two had a five-year-old daughter together.
“All I can say is they took a very good daddy,” she said.
Sunday afternoon, Maxie found her ex-husband’s body inside his gun shop off County Road 200 South in Jennings County. Police said he was shot to death.
“He was murdered, we believe about three o’clock on Sunday afternoon,” said Jennings County Prosecutor Alan Marshall.
Early Tuesday morning, Investigators arrested 24-year-old Darryl Worthen, his 23-year-old brother Dejaun and their cousin, 20-year-old Darion Harris all from Indianapolis. Through surveillance video and witness descriptions of the men visiting the gun shop, police were able to track them down. Police said Darryl Worthen was a FedEx worker who delivered frequently to Maxie’s gun shop and made a delivery last Friday.
“Darryl Worthen, and his brother and Mr. Harris were there on Saturday and then came back Sunday,” Marshall said.
All three men were arrested at their Indianapolis apartment.
“There’s hate. There’s sadness, lots of sadness. I know they caught him, but it doesn’t bring him back,” said Dawn Maxie.
“In our county, we try and give justice with mercy, but in this case there won’t be any mercy,” said Marshall.
The prosecutor didn’t say whether that will include seeking the death penalty, but, he did say more details will be released in the coming days.
The suspects face preliminary robbery and murder charges. They are being held in the Jennings County jail without bond.
Police said they recovered four of the 45 stolen guns and some ammunition.
