No doubt many people would be angry at President Trump for offering this deal.
But the only reason he offered it is that he knows the Democrats will reject it.
President Trump’s immigration compromise package to end the partial government shutdown drew sharp reactions from Democratic and Republican lawmakers alike.
In a televised White House address on Saturday afternoon, Trump offered Democrats a three-year extension of protections for 700,000 Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients, in exchange for the $5.7 billion he has been seeking for a barrier along the nation’s southern border with Mexico.
“Our immigration system should be a source of pride … not a source of shame as it is all over the world,” Trump said in his plea.
The president’s proposal was met with disdain from an array of top Democratic lawmakers. Many used the same language in their critiques, accusing Trump of holding the government and federal workers “hostage.”
I was scared he was going to offer DACA. Offering three years of DACA is not as bad as offering the whole shebang, obviously. But we shouldn’t even be talking about DACA again until SCOTUS rules.
But again.
Zero chance they’re taking this deal.
What we didn’t hear from the President was any sympathy for the federal workers who face so much uncertainty because of the chaos of the #TrumpShutdown.

Democrats were hopeful that @realDonaldTrump was finally willing to re-open government & proceed with a much-needed discussion to protect the border. Unfortunately, reports make clear that his proposal is a compilation of previously rejected initiatives. https://t.co/MFwebWSevG pic.twitter.com/yMTm4iP27h

With his statement on the #TrumpShutdown, it’s clear President @realDonaldTrump realizes that by closing the government and hurting so many American workers and their families, he has put himself and the country in an untenable position. pic.twitter.com/u1XsWb4KBt

It was President @realDonaldTrump who single-handedly took away DACA and TPS protections in the first place—offering some protections back in exchange for the wall is not a compromise but more hostage taking.

Trump ordered the end of DACA and TPS. Then he shut down the government. Now he’s holding federal workers hostage, saying he'll temporarily give back what he took away—only if we give him a pointless, ineffective wall he falsely promised Mexico would pay for. This is a bad deal.

This address was just about looking reasonable before declaring a national emergency.
I hope it was a final offer. It certainly gave the impression of being a final offer.
Shut Down All Immigration
Our new meme needs to be “shut it all down.”
We need to begin to demand that zero immigrants be allowed in this country, period. No further details needed. We do not want a single individual crossing our border.
I don’t even want to talk about “oh what about Europeans coming to see New York City or Japs going to Disney World” – we need to demand a complete and total shut down on ANYONE getting in here.
It needs to be like Escape from New York in the reverse.
This is the only meme we need.
We need to attack this entire fetishization of immigration completely. This is not a “nation of immigrants” and immigrants – this is a nation of people who live here.
