Just when you thought the institutionalized racism in the entertainment industry couldn’t possibly get any worse, the heterosexual white men who control Hollywood go and do this.
This… this is an outrage on a scale I can’t even begin to put into words.
This is a Beach Boy-tier outrage.
Marvel’s new superhero series Iron Fist has taken a heavy-handed pummelling from the critics. “Iron Fist isn’t just racially uncomfortable, it’s a boring show,” declared The Verge, while culture site Uproxx called it “limp” and a “complete misfire.”
One bone of contention for critics has been the casting of a white actor as the show’s martial arts expert hero, Danny Rand. Many commentators have suggested the character, who is a white New Yorker in the original comic books, should have been played by an Asian actor in the new Netflix series.
It is extremely problematic to have someone other than an Asian doing martial arts on film.
But that’s just the first strike.
An article by pop-culture journalist Keith Chow titled Marvel, Please Cast an Asian-American Iron Fist went viral when the show was first announced two years ago. But more recently Chow has noted that “there has been some pushback from Asian-Americans”, about his idea of casting an Asian actor in the role.”Because you’re choosing the one martial-arts guy”, using an Asian actor could be seen as reinforcing racial stereotypes, he told Vulture.
Exactly.
Having an Asian do martial arts is extremely problematic.
Finn Jones, who plays Danny Rand, quit Twitter this week over the row. When Jones retweeted a link to a speech by by Rogue One star Riz Ahmed about racial diversity and representation, it prompted an angry backlash other people on the social media platform who accused Jones of hypocrisy.
A white man playing a white character in a film tweeting about diversity… we just broke the problem scale.
Jones respnded to his critics in a series of further tweets, writing: “Please don’t make assumptions on our show before you have seen it. The characterisation of Danny Rand may have remained true to its source material but our show incorporates and celebrates actors from all different backgrounds.”
Comparing the show to Marvel’s previous Netflix offerings Luke Cage and Jessica Jones, he added: “I will go so far as to say that it may be one of the most diverse shows out of the three. There are a lot of characteristics in Danny which are problematic, that’s the point, rather than shy away from them we inspect them. it makes for a rich, intelligent, thought provoking show.
“All of us making this show care about about [sic] creating a socially progressive story whilst keeping true to the comic book fan base”, he concluded.
The way he worded that tweet was highly problematic.
However, Jones’s comments were not well received. Besides retweeting a comment by Bernie Sanders about Donald Trump’s travel ban, he has not posted on the social media site since.
In a statement given to Deadline, Jones explained: “I was inundated by people accusing me of not being allowed to share his voice based on an assumption that our show is going to play into the problems of racial inequality on screen… I’m currently in the middle of filming and I need to stay focused on bringing to life this character without judgment, so I decided to remove myself from twitter for the time being.”
Jones’s co-star Jessica Henwick had previously expressed doubts about appearing in the show. “When they approached me about [playing the role of] Colleen, I was a little bit like, huh, do I want to play an Asian woman who does martial arts who’s a love interest? Do I want to do those three things?” she told Collider.
That’s only two things, but yes – it’s hard to say which is more problematic:
a) an Asian actress doing martial arts on film, or
b) a woman being a love interest
This show needs to be canceled and everyone involved in it needs to go to prison.
