UPDATE:
As it turns out, the British government is not planning to shoot down Russian jets. Or so they told the Russian ambassador in the UK.
BBC:
Russia summoned Britain’s defence attache in Moscow to explain reports that RAF pilots had been authorised to shoot down Russian aircraft in the Middle East, the Foreign Office says.
Newspapers said RAF Tornados in Iraq had been fitted with heat-seeking missiles designed for aerial combat.
But the Ministry of Defence said there was “absolutely no truth” in this.
…
A Foreign Office spokesman said the defence attache had met Russian ministry of defence officials on Sunday.
“The Russian government sought clarification over inaccurate newspaper reports concerning RAF rules of engagement in Iraq,” the spokesman said.
“The defence attache reiterated the British government’s concerns about Russia’s military operation in Syria, including targeting legitimate opposition groups, using unguided weaponry and leading to large numbers of civilian deaths.”
Sooooo. That’s weird.
How often do you hear about papers like the Sunday Times misinforming readers with inaccurate sources?
It happens, but it’s pretty rare. And on something this sensitive – I can’t remember the last time it’s happened.
Did they fake the source? Or did government sources lie to them? Or was the government planning to do that, and changed their mind? Did whoever did this do it to purposefully agitate the situation, or is it just a genuine mistake?
Will the paper and their sources be subject to some kind of investigation, or will we just memory hole the whole thing?
This un-happening is almost as strange as the happening which brought it.

The situation has escalated again.
Though I don’t think this is as big of a deal as it looks, and in fact comes across as just more posturing.
IBT:
As relations between the West and Russia steadily deteriorate, Royal Air Force (RAF) pilots have been given the go-ahead to shoot down Russian military jets when flying missions over Syria and Iraq, if they are endangered by them. The development comes with warnings that the UK and Russia are now “one step closer” to being at war.
RAF Tornado pilots have been instructed to avoid contact with Russian aircraft while engaged in missions for Operation Shader – the codename for the RAF’s anti-Isis work in Iraq and Syria. But their aircraft have been armed with air-to-air missiles and the pilots have been given the green light to defend themselves if they are threatened by Russian pilots.
“The first thing a British pilot will do is to try to avoid a situation where an air-to-air attack is likely to occur — you avoid an area if there is Russian activity,” an unidentified source from the UK’s Permanent Joint Headquarters (PJHQ) told the Sunday Times. “But if a pilot is fired on or believes he is about to be fired on, he can defend himself. We now have a situation where a single pilot, irrespective of nationality, can have a strategic impact on future events.”
I think they are going to be avoiding rather than shooting.
And I also wonder if this report is even accurate. It definitely feels like smoke-blowing.
The UK shooting down a Russian jet would be met with such a response as I can’t begin to imagine.
How many times does Putin have to make it clear that he isn’t joking?
The RAF Tornados aircraft will be armed with heat-seeking Advanced Short Range Air-to-Air Missiles (Asraams, also called AIM-132 missiles). These weapons, which cost £200,000 each, can reach triple the speed of sound and have a longer range than other air-to-air missiles, allowing RAF pilots to shoot down enemy aircraft without being targeted themselves.
The Sunday Times’ report quoted a defence source as saying: “Up till now RAF Tornados have been equipped with 500lb satellite-guided bombs — there has been no or little air-to-air threat. But in the last week the situation has changed. We need to respond accordingly.”
“We need to protect our pilots but at the same time,” said another source. “We’re taking a step closer to war. It will only take one plane to be shot down in an air-to-air battle and the whole landscape will change.“
I don’t see it happening. But that fact that they would even make this claim is in itself pretty insane. There has been no provocation by Russia against any other nation’s aircraft in the region, so coming out and saying this can only be seen as a threat.
Putin has not made any threats like this. But then again, Putin doesn’t make threats.
So who knows. Maybe it will happen.
It it does, it will be the declaration of WWIII over the Jews’ desire to defend their terrorists fighting against an elected leader in a third world country they don’t like.
Think about what you’re doing here, people.
Do you really think your own populations are going to support you in a World War you started to defend moderate terrorists involved in a conflict the average person cannot make any sense of and does not understand?
But I suppose it was the UK who started WWII over some bit of nothing in Poland.
Strange Days.
