Russia Fines Google $366 Million

Just ban Google, Russia.

They are a threat to freedom of speech and free access to information.

Yandex works fine and has actually good memes on the image search, as well as pirated content. Also, when you type “Daily Stormer,” the top result is the website “Daily Stormer.”

RT:

Russia’s court has fined American tech giant Google more than 21 billion rubles ($366 million) on Monday, for its failure to delete prohibited information on the conflict in Ukraine, RIA Novosti has reported from the court.

Moscow’s Tagansky District Court has slapped a turnover-based fine on the IT-company for its repeated refusal to delete information prohibited by Russian law. Roskomnadzor, the national internet and media watchdog, had previously required the company to remove from YouTube all “misleading information” regarding Russia’s military offensive in Ukraine.

Prior to the court’s ruling, Roskomnadzor had sent Google 17 notifications requiring it to abide by Russian law, but the tech giant failed to comply. The total fine is equal to one tenth of the company and its affiliated structures’ annual turnover in Russia.

Russia has long been critical of the way foreign platforms distribute online content that violates national laws. Last December, the Silicon Valley firm was hit with a fine of 7.2 billion rubles (around $98.1 million) for failing to take down banned content, which was the first time that an IT company had been fined in Russia with a penalty linked to its earnings.

Although I do have a dog in this fight, this is the wrong approach. They should be attacked for omission – i.e., purposefully suppressing information about “Ukraine” war crimes.

Look at the Donbass search.

Just fake news. None of the stories that are actually popular on the internet about the war crimes the Ukraine is committing. Nothing about how badly Ukraine is losing the war. Despite the fact that this is what people want to read about when they type that word.

Seriously.

Google claims to believe that when someone types “Daily Stormer” into their search engine, the 30th most likely thing they are looking for is the Daily Stormer website.

That is the last result on page 3.

Meanwhile, on Yandex.

Google is committing fraud.

They advertise that their search results appear in the order of the likelihood that the thing you are looking for lines up with the query you typed.

It is not possible that they believe that when someone types “Daily Stormer,” there is a likelihood that they are looking for 29 things other than the Daily Stormer website.

Google shouldn’t even index it at all. It should be “we think this is evil because they made mean jokes, so we refuse to allow people to see it.” That is more honest than “we believe the Daily Stormer website is the 30th most likely thing someone is looking for when they inquire about the Daily Stormer.”
