Now we’re just getting goofy here, kids.
Bots and Russian trolls spread misinformation about vaccines on Twitter to sow division and distribute malicious content before and during the American presidential election, according to a new study.
Scientists at George Washington University, in Washington DC, made the discovery while trying to improve social media communications for public health workers, researchers said. Instead, they found trolls and bots skewing online debate and upending consensus about vaccine safety.
The study discovered several accounts, now known to belong to the same Russian trolls who interfered in the US election, as well as marketing and malware bots, tweeting about vaccines.
Russian trolls played both sides, the researchers said, tweeting pro- and anti-vaccine content in a politically charged context.
“These trolls seem to be using vaccination as a wedge issue, promoting discord in American society,” Mark Dredze, a team member and professor of computer science at Johns Hopkins, which was also involved in the study, said.
“By playing both sides, they erode public trust in vaccination, exposing us all to the risk of infectious diseases. Viruses don’t respect national boundaries.”
The memes are real now.
I can’t write anymore about the absurdity of this Russian meddling shit.
Everyone gets it. It’s just a gigantic hoax. All you have to do is return to the core concept, that you can figure out who is doing something on the internet.
Look at any famous internet crime arrest – none of them were ever due to “backtracing” or “fingerprints” – major things investigated by the government were based on detective work, and then the perpetrators were convicted only after they had records from their own seized devices.
For example:
Dread Pirate Roberts (Ross Ulbricht), mastermind of the Silk Road, had a warrant issued for his arrest based on a name he’d used under both his real name and his alias. The FBI had to do a distraction to grab his laptop from him – while he was using it – because if he’d had a few seconds he could have deleted everything on it and there would have been no evidence of any crime. If they’d seized it when it wasn’t open, he could have refused to give them the passwords, and probably he had a dead man’s switch on it, and they eventually would have had to just release him.
Ulbricht was first connected to “Dread Pirate Roberts” by Gary Alford, an IRS investigator working with the DEA on the Silk Road case, in mid-2013. The connection was made by linking the username “altoid”, used during Silk Road’s early days to announce the website, and a forum post in which Ulbricht, posting under the nickname “altoid”, asked for programming help and gave his email address, which contained his full name. In October 2013, Ulbricht was arrested by the FBI while at the Glen Park branch of the San Francisco Public Library, and accused of being the “mastermind” behind the site.
To prevent Ulbricht from encrypting or deleting files on the laptop he was using to run the site as he was arrested, two agents pretended to be quarreling lovers. When they had sufficiently distracted him, according to Joshuah Bearman of Wired, a third agent grabbed the laptop while Ulbricht was distracted by the apparent lovers’ fight and handed it to agent Thomas Kiernan. Kiernan then inserted a flash drive in one of the laptop’s USB ports, with software that copied key files.
That is the way computer criminals are caught and convicted of crimes. Not by private organizations finding “fingerprints.”
I don’t want to talk about vaccine conspiracies either.
Okay, I will.
I think there is a whole bunch of disinformation on both sides of this issue.
Firstly, people are getting way too many vaccines. Many of these vaccines are dangerous. A lot of them give you the disease they are trying to prevent. Some of them are effectively experimental, and put on the market anyway.
The pharmaceutical drug industry, in general, is a racket. There is nothing especially unique about this situation: virtually every commercial industry in the United States is completely and totally corrupt, due to a complete lack of any form of regulation over that industry by the US government, because the US government is so entirely corrupt and allows these industries to determine policy (or the lack thereof).
It isn’t simply vaccines that are a scam. Virtually all drugs are a scam. There are literally none of them I would take, other than antibiotics in cases where a bacterial infection is certain to spread to other parts of my body or destroy an organ.
That said, I don’t think vaccines cause autism.
I believe that most likely, autism is caused by plastics in the environment.
But very little research is being done on the issue of autism at all, because it is largely a white male problem. So we really don’t know.
If I had a child, I would do the research, and not trust either the pharmaceutical industry or Russian hackers on the issue.
