In 1943, Disney put out an anti-Nazi propaganda cartoon featuring Donald Duck called “Der Fuehrer’s Face.”
For some reason, certain media outlets are acting like this is rare or newly found footage, even though it isn’t. It is in the news because some Russian guys got fined for posting it on VK (Russian version of Facebook).
The two men who posted it were fined $45 each, because the film contains swastikas. It’s a weird interpretation of the law, that even an explicitly anti-Nazi film would be banned.
But maybe it’s because the propaganda message of the film is so strange that it almost comes across as pro-Nazi, in that it claims that the Germans are bad because they are working so hard to win the war. I mean, it would have made more sense to be like “these Germans are really working hard, we need to work harder!”
Instead, the film shows Donald working really hard in Germany, and then at the end he wakes up in the US and it was all a dream and he doesn’t have to work.
I guess the implication is that “you don’t want Germany to invade America, they’ll make you work really hard – Germans are obsessed with work and you want to chill.” But Donald is seen working hard to build armaments in a country that was at war with the whole world, so it’s just like “wow, these Nazis really care about their cause.”
Most American propaganda was all about how people should work hard and ration.
So, a propaganda message of “Nazis are a problem because they work so hard and ration in order to try and win the war” seems counterintuitive.
Also interesting is that it portrays the Nazis as buffoonish, rather than evil. The “evil Nazi” thing came later, when the Jews came up with all these lampshade and soap stories and started pushing them in the 50s and 60s.
Part of that was no doubt that during the sixties, before the Jew takeover of Christianity and the promotion of a Holocaust itself as a religious concept, being like “these Nazis are killing Jews” would not have been good propaganda because most Americans would have been like “well, maybe we should stay out of their way then and let them take care of business?”
