Russia is starting to turtle-up. They’re getting ready for total autarky. That means capital autarky – no more foreign investors. Product autarky – no more Western imports. Financial autarky – no more SWIFT system and probably Internet autarky too – no more Faceberg.

Facebook has until the end of 2018 to comply with Russia’s data storage law, or be banned like messenger service Telegram or professional networking website LinkedIn.
The law requires all social networks to move data on Russian users to Russia. Facebook is also obliged to remove all prohibited information, according to the head of Russian internet watchdog Roskomnadzor, Aleksandr Zharov.
“If none of [the steps are taken by Facebook] or some of this is not fulfilled, or the Russian state is not informed of the intention to do so, then obviously there will be a question of blocking,” Zharov told Izvestia daily.
This is part of a concentrated campaign by Russia to clamp down on Western social media. Which I can understand, given how toxic it is.
But I used to be a free speech absolutist.
I believed as a principle that speech should never be censored or monitored or punished. It always struck me as morally wrong to deny anyone the right to express their ideas. Deep down, I honestly wish we could have a society that allowed absolute free speech.
But when I became an adult, I stopped looking at the world in black and white terms.
I realized that non-Whites should never have a voice in White countries. I realized that Jews should all have their tongues cut out and be forced to communicate through sign language and grunts only – to prevent their lies from spreading into society. I realized that women given the right to speak freely will subsume the entire world in a tidal wave of gossip and emoticons from which we will never recover.
In short, I realized that “freedom” isn’t a cardinal virtue.
That being said, I’m still against censoring unpopular opinions, for obvious reasons. Still, I realize that for every one goy that makes his way to the Alt-Right on a free internet, there are going to be thousands of normies who get sucked into the virtue-signaling online worlds of Faceberg, Reddit and Buzzfeed.
Considering what’s good for the country as a whole, if Russia wants to ban these sites, I say go for it. Hell, they’ve even been banning porno sites, which is good. While I identify with edgy internet culture and believe Internet rights should never be infringed upon, I realize that this is not what most normies in any country think, let alone Russia.

Deep down, I want to believe that the bureaucrats in charge of this internet autarky campaign know what they’re doing, but lol, let’s be real, no one there has poured over the moral and social consequences of Internet censorship.
It’s just a bunch of Soviet-era Boomer brainlets with banhammers going ham on Western companies out of a convoluted sense of patriotism and old-person suspicion of the internet.
In this case though, it’s a good move.
But probably unnecessary. Russia needs to fight the whole “repressive authoritarian regime” image, not embrace it at this critical juncture. It could backfire.
They need a young, meme-savvy Internet aficionado running their Internet campaign if they want to have any success going forward.
