Scientists Managed to Grow Veggies in Antarctica

Wait… that’s not Iceberg lettuce. What’s wrong with these people? Such an easy dad joke, and they blew it.

Wow, look at that, White men continuing to do important and interesting science even as their countries are burned to the ground by foreign hordes.

I mean, if we can grow food in Antarctica now, maybe we should just pack up and move there. The arctic circle is the perfect White ethnostate: brown people will never follow us there.

Actually, who am I kidding. I’m sure some Swedes will end up providing climate-controlled dome habitats for Somalian refugees at some point.

Antarctica is not the most likely place to find fresh ingredients for a salad.

But German scientists have just collected — and eaten — their first batch of lettuce, cucumbers and radishes from a new greenhouse on the frozen continent.

“It tasted as if we had harvested it fresh from the garden,” Bernhard Gropp, the manager of the Neumayer Station III, a German research facility in Antarctica, said in a statement.

No Moslems, no Jews, no niggers. Looks comfy af tbh.

The shipping container-size greenhouse, called EDEN ISS, was installed in February about a quarter-mile (400 meters) from the research station, which is located on the Ekström Ice Shelf. The food-growing lab is providing welcome fresh veggies for Gropp and his other isolated colleagues during long missions in Antarctica. But EDEN ISS has a loftier mission; the facility is an experiment led by the German Aerospace Center (DLR) designed to test the best methods for cultivating crops for astronauts.

Space-grown plants could help sustain crews on long missions inside the International Space Station (ISS), or at farther destinations like the moon or Mars, where deliveries of fresh food would be less practical.

Right, so this is actually an important step in colonizing space. If we can’t grow food in extreme environments, that’ll always tether us to the earth.

We need giant space stations full of farmers in order to create a neo-feudal space empire.

Tfw I’ll never be a space-faring agrarian lord.

With such a hostile environment outside, the Antarctic greenhouse indeed has conditions like those of a spacecraft: It has no soil and no natural sunlight, and it has to operate as a totally closed system, with its water distribution, purplish artificial lighting and carbon dioxide levels tightly controlled.

In fact, Antarctica is more hostile than space in certain ways. It’s a lot harder to keep an environment at a warm temperature in a freezing cold atmosphere than in the vacuum of space, since vaccum is a near perfect insulator (only infrared radiation can leak out). Also, it’s easier to get solar power in space than on earth. However, you still have to contend with all that space radiation, which is going to be a problem.

I guess it’s good that the Germans are doing this space research, but I don’t know what’s the point of developing these futuristic technologies when your country will be converted into an Islamic caliphate in the near future.
