THIS JUST IN FROM LAS VEGAS!
Jesus Campos, the hotel security guard who was wounded during the Las Vegas massacre, is staying for free at an undisclosed hotel owned by MGM Resorts International, according to the company.
The arrangement has led to speculation that MGM wants to prevent the media from questioning Campos about the Oct. 1 massacre, in which a gunman opened fire from a hotel owned by the company. Campos, who was shot in a leg during the rampage that killed 58 people and injured more than 500, is on paid leave while he recovers.
“I really think it’s about not allowing reporters and lawyers and investigators to get to him,” said attorney Mo Aziz, who represents one of the Las Vegas shooting victims. “I think they want to make sure he doesn’t make any statement that could really become problematic. And the reason they put him up on their property is so that they’ll know at all times where he is and who’s talking with him.”
Campos’ whereabouts have been mostly uncertain ever since he abruptly canceled several media interviews shortly after his release from the hospital, including one interview scheduled for Oct. 5 with Fox News’ Sean Hannity.
The 25-year old security guard surfaced briefly for a daytime television interivew with entertainer Ellen DeGeneres that aired Oct. 11, amid reports that MGM wanted to keep Campos from having to field tougher questions from journalists.
MGM maintains that Campos is living rent-free solely because of the company’s concern for his well-being.
“When his name became public, Jesus was inundated with media coming to his home,” MGM executive vice president Alan Feldman said.
Alan Feldman?
You know what – I’ll bet he’s Jewish. I’ve really been noticing lately that people in charge of institutions tend to be Jewish.
There is an interesting dynamic here between the FBI, local law enforcement and MGM – any of these people could be responsible for failures following the attack, and the latter two could be responsible for failures before and during, but it is unlikely that they are holding equal responsibility.
Yes, MGM could have reason to cover things up, assuming that the FBI timeline of their failure to contact police is true – they have released their own timeline disputing the feds’ account.
They also have the issue of letting this guy bring 42 guns and who knows how many pounds of ammunition into the hotel room. I don’t really think they had any reason to check the bags, given that no one has done this before,
And just in general, the whole scene looks bad for their brand and they would surely rather it not be the in the media.
HOWEVER – the feds would be helped if it looks like it was MGM and not them who didn’t want this guy on TV. Furthermore, there is no reason why it is weird that MGM would give a security guard who got shot in the line of duty a free room. Besides the fact that this is good publicity for them and makes them look like nice people (although that is now being inverted), it also looks good if Campos ever decides to sue them over the shooting.
I think it is much more likely that the feds and not MGM wanted this guy off the TV.
Whatever the case, it is interesting that the media is now admitting that there was a conspiracy to keep him from getting a real interview.
