Senate Passes Tax Reform Bill

Amazingly, the Republican controlled Senate has finally achieved a substantial legislative win. There’s just a few more steps needed before tax reform is signed into law.

The Senate passed their big tax reform bill in the early hours of the morning today. The bill was passed along party lines by a vote of 51-49. Bob Corker was the lone Republican Senator who voted against it.

The good news is that it looks like the Republicans might finally be able to get a major legislative accomplishment under their belt.

The Hill:

The Senate passed legislation to overhaul the tax code early Saturday morning, handing Republicans a badly needed legislative and political victory.

Senators voted 51-49 to pass the plan, capping off days of debate and hand wringing as leadership worked frantically behind the scenes to win over holdouts and get the proposal in line with the chamber’s rules.

Republican Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) bucked party leadership and voted against the plan amid lingering concerns over the impact on the deficit. No Democratic senator supported the legislation, with Democrats quickly leaving the chamber after voting no.

Here are Trump’s tweets following the bill’s passage.

The Senate bill now has to be reconciled with the previously passed House bill in a conference committee. After the differences are reconciled, the revised bill has to be approved by both chambers before it goes to Trump for a signature.

The Senate version of the bill repeals the Obamacare mandate which is good. Of course, we have no idea if that will remain in the final version.

Ultimately, the final bill will likely only represent a moderate reform of the tax code. It was however important for the Republicans to pass a major legislative accomplishment in order to prove that they aren’t totally incompetent.

The economy has been doing better under Trump largely due to the executive actions he has taken to repeal a slew of government regulations. If the economy aided by this tax reform bill continues to do well in 2018, the Republicans stand a good chance of gaining more seats in Congress. This is important for us, especially if we are to elect more Trump styled populists.

It’s all about moving the overton window to the point where we can start electing full blown White nationalists. As politics becomes increasingly more polarized, we will see this happen at some point.
