Authorities are investigating after thieves toting a shotgun robbed a group of park patrons.

“I cannot believe that something like this would happen here,” Jacqueline Smith said about having a shotgun pointed at her head.

Kansas City police were called about 10:45 p.m. Sunday to Brookside Park at East 57th and McGee streets on a robbery. Police say five people in the park were robbed.

When officers arrived they found two separate groups who had been robbed by four teens.

Police said one of suspects pulled out a shotgun and told the victims to get on the ground. The thieves then stole more than $1,000 worth of valuables, including jewelry, clothing and purses.

Smith said she and her friends were about 30 feet from the vehicle when the robbers “came up to us with big shotguns.”

Emilia Marsh was terrified as they pointed shotguns at them and ordered them to hand over their valuables.

“It was scary. One of them came up to me and said, ‘What’s your phone password?’ with a gun pointed right at me,” Marsh said.

One of the men was hit by a robber demanding access to his vehicle.

The women and police say the crooks even attempted to steal a victim’s car but couldn’t figure out how to start the vehicle because it had a manual transmission. The robbers then fled on foot.

No injuries were reported, and no arrests have been made at this time.

While the women weren’t physically harmed, they were emotionally traumatized. They say they will not return to Brookside Park.
