WVUE:
A man was arrested Friday after he allegedly carjacked a woman in the Tulane University Hospital parking garage, was chased into a cemetery and apprehended inside one of the tombs.
Karl Jackson, 20, faces first-degree robbery, possession of stolen things and desecration of graves.
The incident began at about 6 a.m. in the garage at 150 S. Liberty St. According to the 55-year-old female victim, she was walking toward the elevators when Jackson approached her, implied he had a gun and demanded her purse and car keys. Police said Jackson grabbed the victim’s arms, causing her to drop her keys. Jackson picked them up, located the victim’s 2013 white BMW X5 and drove out of the garage.
The BMW was equipped with a tracking device that led officers to the intersection of North Villere and Conti streets, where Jackson jumped out of the car and fled into the closed Saint Louis Cemetery Number 1 at Basin and St. Louis streets, according to police.
Officers converged around the cemetery and set up a perimeter. A K-9 unit arrived and Jackson was eventually found hiding inside one of the tombs. The police dog bit Jackson, and he surrendered without further incident. The victim arrived on the scene and positively identified Jackson as the man who carjacked her. A weapon was never recovered.
Jackson was treated at University Hospital for minor injuries and jailed at Central Lock-up. There was no immediate word on bond.
