A man initially charged with murder in the road-rage death of an off-duty 70-year-old sheriff’s deputy last New Year’s Eve has accepted a plea bargain to lesser charges in San Bernardino Superior Court.
Alonzo Leron Smith, 31, pleaded no contest Friday, Dec. 21, to voluntary manslaughter, three counts of assault by means of force likely to produce great bodily injury, and one count of threatening a crime — all felonies — in the death of San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Deputy Larry Falce.
Smith, who also admitted to a special allegation of having prior felony convictions, will be sentenced March 1 before Judge Colin Bilash, according to online court records.
Sheriff John McMahon issued the following statement on Smith’s case: “We will continue to remember and honor the exemplary life of Deputy Larry Falce, our partner and friend. The justice system has carried out its duty and we must find peace with the sentence that the court will order.”
Smith was arrested on Jan. 3 following a confrontation three days earlier with Falce, a 36-year veteran of the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department described as an animal lover who was so dedicated to his career in law enforcement he continued serving on the force long after he maxed out on his pension.
