Manuel Valls, France’s Socialist Prime Minister, recently uttered some dumb comments regarding the relationship between Jews and France.
Basically he asserted that the recent anti-Jew violence not only puts Jews in physical danger, but also the concept and values of the French Republic—Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité.
Here are Valls’s exact words, per The Atlantic:
“The choice was made by the French Revolution in 1789 to recognize Jews as full citizens … To understand what the idea of the republic is about, you have to understand the central role played by the emancipation of the Jews. It is a founding principle.”
…
“If 100,000 French people of Spanish origin were to leave, I would never say that France is not France anymore. But if 100,000 Jews leave, France will no longer be France. The French Republic will be judged a failure.”
The interests of the French people should be taken to heart, not the interests of the French Republic itself. But do you honestly expect a Socialist Party politician to uphold the interests of the French people? In Valls’s mind he may believe he’s doing so, but we know he’s not.
Recognizing Jews as full citizens was a terrible blunder of the French Revolution; the effects still pervade France and all Europe to this day. If Jews left France en masse, the French people will benefit.
