The sole survivor of an on-air shooting that killed two TV journalists in Virginia says she was ‘ready to die’ when the gunman returned to shoot her in the back.
Vicki Gardner, 61, was being interviewed on WDBJ by Alison Parker, 24, and her cameraman Adam Ward, 27, when a disgruntled former employee of the Roanoke, Virginia news channel opened fire.
‘I just saw movement and then gunfire,’ Gardner told Fox News in her first public comments since the horrific shooting. ‘Lots and lots of gunfire.’
‘From that point it was very chaotic.’
Gardner immediately dropped the the ground after the shots were first fired by Vester Flanagan, curling up in the fetal position as she pretended to be dead.
‘I realized it was quiet and everybody was down,’ she said. ‘I felt as though the next shot – I knew – the next shot he was just going to shoot me in the head because that’s what he was doing.’
Flanagan didn’t say a word as he returned to shoot Gardner in the back.
