So much for a secular Turkey.
RT:
Istanbul’s Hagia Sophia, originally a Byzantine Christian church, might be turned into a mosque again – a potential back-down from the legacy of Turkey’s secular government that turned the site into a museum in 1935.
“This is not unlikely,” President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said during a live interview with Turkish television on Monday, adding, “We might even change its name to Ayasofya Mosque.”
Yeah, so this is a direct reaction to Tarrant’s manifesto.
I don’t know why, but Tarrant really got under Erdogan’s skin lol.
Actually, that’s a lie. I do know why.
It’s because he called Erdogan out by name… and encouraged people to try and kill him.
Most leaders could laugh at that. But Erdogan doesn’t laugh.
The Hagia Sophia became a museum under Turkey’s secularist government back in 1935, but “we may as well take a step and change that,” he said.
Erdogan hinted that the change in status would benefit tourists. “Tourists come and go at the Blue Mosque. Do they pay anything?” he asked, referring to another popular site in Istanbul. “Well, we will do the same with the Hagia Sofia.”
The Hagia Sophia was first built as a church by the Byzantine Empire in the 6th century and served as the main Orthodox Christian church. Following the conquest of Constantinople, now Istanbul, by the Ottomans in 1453, it was immediately converted into a mosque.
At first, I thought that Erdogan was cynically using the tragedy to get brownie points in the Islamic world. Now, I think he’s legit mad and going all-out with this Neo-Ottoman shit. Turkey is now straight-up competing with Saudi Arabia and others when it comes to trying to secure its spot as the world’s leader of Islam.
Historically, because of Ataturk, who turned the country secular, it looked like Turkey was going to back away from its Islamo-Imperial vision and focus on itself for awhile and take the time to become a modern, Westernized nation-state.
The pro-Secular school has been losing out for years now though, and Erdogan gets most of his support from the rural peasantry that has 12 kids and believes in radical Islam, as opposed to the Westernized cosmopolitan city-dwellers who don’t like the direction that the country is going.
Turkey is also a far more serious contender than Saudi Arabia for the crown of the Islamic world. Not only are the Turks smarter, but there are more of them in Europe willing to commit Jihad.
In short, they’re a new threat to Europe. But they’re a threat that Europe has basically created and kept close ties with to undermine their rivals in the East. Turkey is a Frankenstein that was kept artificially alive by France and Britain and even Germany because of… well, just take a wild guess.
Turkey’s control of Constantinople undermined Russia’s ambitions
This isn’t even ancient history.
The idea of having Turkey join the EU was proposed by the UK and the US to undermine the EU and to prevent a consolidated continental power from arising in Europe.
Turkey has always been a threat to Europe… but more precisely, some European powers have always used Turkey against other European rivals. Because of Brenton Tarrant though, the mask has fallen off Erdogan and his ambitions have been laid bare, and it will become harder and harder for European nations to have dealings with Erdogan.
When you really think about it, the entryism into Europe strategy that the more moderate and intelligent Turks preferred (the Kemalists) will now be fundamentally undermined and stopped in its tracks because Erdogan has decided to pivot into full Neo-Ottoman mode as a response to the NZ shooting. It is easier to justify letting in a secular Turkey than it is to justify letting in an Islamo-expansionist Turkey, whose migrant citizens commit terror attacks and unabashedly promote Islamic domination.
When you really really think about it, Tarrant may have saved Europe by rustling Erdogan so badly and getting him to go all-out like this.
