Jasper County Sheriff Mitchel Newman said Tuesday morning that the suspect in the murder of a woman from the Old Salem Community in Newton County, had confessed to the murder. Newman’s statement came during an interview during the 8:00 news on KJAS.
Kevin Andrea Byerly, 55, of Newton had appeared before Jasper County Precinct 3 Justice of the Peace Mike Smith early Tuesday and was charged with murder in connection with the death of Candi McKee, 43. After hearing the circumstances surrounding the case, Judge Smith set bond on Byerly at $1 million.
Officers believe Byerly killed her on County Road 588, just off of Farm to Market Road 1004, near Call on Monday morning, before setting her car on fire and dumping her body in the Sabine River at the Burr Ferry Bridge on Highway 63, between Burkeville and Leesville.
A body believing to be that of McKee was recovered from the Louisiana side of the river shortly before 5:00 on Monday afternoon in a joint effort between the Jasper and Newton County Sheriff’s Departments along with the Vernon Parish Sheriff’s Department in Leesville.
Newman said Tuesday that an autopsy was being performed at the Jefferson County Morgue in Nederland in an attempt to not only positively identify the body, but also determine the cause of death.
