I stormed the beaches of Normandy. I spent three years fighting all over Europe, experienced the horrors of war first hand, saw close friends get ripped apart by mortars and machine gun fire. Some died in my arms, screaming for their mothers. I escaped death only by a very close margin multiple times myself. But I never gave up, never doubted our mission. I knew what I was fighting for and even more important, what I was fighting against. And this gave me the strength to keep going, even when it seemed like suicide. And I survived. Most of my friends did not, but it was still worth it.
Had we not fought this war, and won this war, my granddaughter would not have the freedom she has today.
