“That Nigga” – Africans Stage Protest Against Miss Belgium

In a weird way, it seems that beauty contests are becoming one of the cultural battlegrounds through which the European Genocide is asserted and contested. Following Miss Helsinki and Miss Universe, here we have a controversy involving Miss Belgium.

This first blew up a few weeks ago but it seems the brown people aren’t letting go of it. For those not aware of the story so far, let me summarise. Romanie Schotte was elected Miss Belgium. Afterwards, people checked her social media accounts and found the image shown at the bottom on her Instagram feed. A negro photobombs her, someone responds by saying “That nigga” and she replies “I know” with a brown emoticon.

The demonstrators denounce the publication on the social network Instagram of a comment with an emoticon in the form of excrement, in connection with a black man in the background of one of her photos. They add that she should have rejected the use of the term “nigga”, used by the person she was responding to in the message.

Although this publication occurred prior to her election, in the view of the demonstrators her status as Miss requires her to represent democratic values in the name of Belgium and not to legitimise racist remarks.

According to Magaly Nkento, organiser of the gathering, “Belgium is also multiple cultures and origins. If she is allowed to do that, what will it say about Belgium and Europe?”

Ms. Nkento also rejects the justifications offered by Romanie Schotte, which she considers common attitudes that banalise racism. “She explained it away saying that it was a chocolate ice cream and not a ‘shit’ emoticon, she must take us for imbeciles.”
