Perhaps a brown-skinned Hamlet is appropriate, though. Research undertaken by the BBC has recently uncovered a more accurate portrait of Shakespeare. According to Bongo Abdullah, the BBC’s head of historical programming, it seems members of the Shakespeare family were known for their swart complexions and earned their name because they really did go around throwing and shaking spears at people, demanding money under duress.
