Simon Harris is a historian who has studied Catalan a great deal, as such he has some valuable insight on the historical precedent in the recent referendum.
Harris also seems to think there will be much more violence in the coming months, and he is likely right when you have agents of the state currently tossing women down the stairs and kicking them.
While this practice shouldn’t be disavowed generally, in this circumstance it’s pretty bad for more than just optics.
The Catalonian people clearly want independence, and the Spanish government clearly wants to stop that even if it means using state-sanctioned violence.
If the Catalonian people don’t give up – which they shouldn’t – the state will start using more drastic measures to stop it with each demonstration and act taken by Catalan for independence.
Eventually, people like Pool won’t jokingly ask if they’re going to start sending in tanks.
