At the most recent elections in 2013, the anti-immigration Lega Nord got only 0.6% of the vote in Macerata, the town where Italian teenager Pamela Mastropietro was butchered and possibly eaten by African drug dealer immigrants, prompting Luca Traini to go on an urban safari not long afterwards.
Traini’s gun rampage evoked signs of popular support throughout Italy, which in recent years has been invaded by hundreds of thousands of sub-Saharan Africans.
But recent events have shaken up Macerata’s political scene dramatically. Last night the Lega got 20.9% in the parliamentary vote and 21.3% in the Senate vote. This puts it in 2nd place behind 5-Stars and means it has shot past the Socialist PD. Commentators are calling it the “Traini effect”.
