Three men have been charged with murder in the 2010 shooting of an 80-year-old woman at her Hayward home during a burglary.
Alameda County prosecutors on Tuesday charged Donnie Howard, 24, Ayodele Patterson, 21, and Lionel Harris, 22, with murder, burglary and weapons enhancements in the slaying of Carolyn Pavon. They are being held without bail at Santa Rita Jail in Dublin.
Pavon was found dead at her home on Spring Drive on June 27, 2010, by her son-in-law, who was concerned because she wasn’t answering her phone. Police determined that Pavon had been shot twice in the chest and once each under her chin and on the side of her nose, Hayward police Inspector Fraser Ritchie wrote in an affidavit.
After Howard was arrested in June 2011 in connection with an unrelated burglary, he told police that Patterson and Harris had killed Pavon, Ritchie wrote.
Patterson and Harris were arrested last Thursday on unrelated warrants. Harris told police that the three men had walked two blocks from Howard’s apartment to Pavon’s home with the intent of breaking in, Ritchie wrote.
Howard kicked in a side door to the garage before Patterson – who was then 17, but is being prosecuted as an adult – accosted Pavon as she sat on a couch in the living room, telling her, “Give it up old lady!” police said. Pavon didn’t move or resist, but Patterson allegedly shot her with a .22-caliber rifle before the group stole cash and jewelry.
Pavon lived with her dog in a hillside neighborhood between Mission Boulevard and Cal State East Bay. Neighbors said that her husband died in 2002, and that her slaying came about a month after someone had broken into her home, stealing jewelry and vandalizing the house.
