Facebook and Twitter have invited government regulation from the Trump administration through their targeted censorship of right-wing personalities on their sites.

Donald Trump did a wide ranging interview with Reuters today. When asked about social media censorship, he said that it’s “very dangerous” to allow Facebook and Twitter to self-regulate content.

CNBC:

President Donald Trump is again putting pressure on technology companies, telling Reuters in an interview published Monday that it’s “very dangerous” when social platforms like Twitter and Facebook self-regulate content.

“I won’t mention names but when they take certain people off of Twitter or Facebook and they’re making that decision, that is really a dangerous thing because that could be you tomorrow,” Trump said.

Major social media companies have for months been responding to claims that they censor conservatives. Trump last month called Twitter “discriminatory” and accused the company of “shadow banning” prominent Republicans by de-emphasizing certain accounts from search results.

His comments further reinforce what he previously said about social media censorship over the weekend.

We have a situation where these large Silicon Valley based tech monopolies are colluding together to ban right-wing voices from the the modern day public square. It was one thing when they were banning racial nationalists, but now they’re going after civic nationalists and right-wing libertarians (even registered national candidates are being censored). These people make up a solid portion of Trump’s political base. They’ve forced Trump into a position where he has no choice but to crackdown on these companies so his supporters have a voice in upcoming elections.

Brad Parscale played a key role in Trump’s 2016 campaign in the social media space. He did such a good job that Trump elevated him to play an even bigger role for the 2020 campaign.

It’s also worth noting that Trump’s 2020 re-election campaign manager is a man named Brad Parscale. During the 2016 campaign, Parscale was in charge of Trump’s social media and digital advertising operations. He was specifically credited with having launched social media advertising campaigns targeting voters in Wisconsin and Michigan which helped swing those states for Trump.

Here’s a direct quote from Parscale.

I understood early that Facebook was how Donald Trump was going to win. Twitter is how he talked to the people. Facebook was going to be how he won.

Parscale is a tech savvy guy. He understands how important it is for them to have a level playing field on sites like Facebook and Twitter. If Parscale knows this, it is certain that Trump also knows this.

At this point, it is a virtual certainty that Trump is going to drop the hammer down on these social media companies. Not only is it beneficial for Trump’s 2020 campaign, but it has to be done in support of the First Amendment and free political speech.

Trump has the unique opportunity to unleash a social media army the likes of which the world has never seen. It will be quite the thing to watch when it finally happens.
