Turkey has Received 5 Billion Euros from the EU to Prepare It for Becoming a Member

Billions were invested in this goal. Between 2007 and 2013, the European Union gave 4.795 billion euros in the programme for Pre-accession Assistance (IPA). And in the period from 2014 to 2020 another 4.453 billioon euros are planned, of which 1.5 billion euros alone are intended for building up the state of law and securing human rights.

It’s a great thing that the Austrian government is now calling for Turkey’s accession negotiations to be terminated. Any single member government has the power to veto Turkey’s application. But will they have the courage to exercise this veto in the face of pressure from other governments, including the US government, which has always been Turkey’s biggest cheerleader?
