The police have charged a second suspect in the shooting death of a city man in downtown Providence on Dec. 26.
Walter Kpan, 31, of North Providence, was arraigned on charges of first-degree murder during the commission of a robbery, committing a crime of violence with a firearm, carrying a pistol without a license and conspiracy in the death of David Long.
Police say Kpan and Pofinima Mabuo Gweama Jr., 29, of Pawtucket, were involved in Long’s murder during a robbery at about 4 a.m. on the 100 block of Fountain Street.
Kpan, who told Judge Stephen Isherwood his address and age in a voice just above a whisper, was held without bail at his District Court arraignment Thursday. Because the charges are felonies, he did not enter a plea.
According to a police affidavit, Long and three other people were in a car parked in front of 100 Fountain St. when two people opened the car’s doors, showed firearms and robbed them of their money and valuables.
A witness told police that Kpan approached the driver’s side and told the people in the car to turn over their belongings or “he would blow their heads off,” police said in an affidavit.
One of the suspects fired a shot, police said, striking and killing Long, who was a rear seat passenger. The people who were with Long took him to Rhode Island Hospital, where he was declared dead of a gunshot wound.
