You got a loiscense for those pizzabites, m8?
Food served in restaurants and sold in supermarkets could have a calorie limit applied by the government in a bid to tackle obesity.
Ready meals, pizzas, onion bhajis and salads are among the foods which would fall under a calorie cap if the current plans being considered by Public Health England (PHE) are enforced.
The changes would impact the food industry, who may have to adapt their recipes and cooking methods in order to lower the calorie content to comply with the regulations.
The way food is labelled in stores will not change, nor will the current calorie guidelines for men (2,500 calories per day) and women (2,000 calories per day).
In a statement to Sky News, Dr Alison Tedstone, chief nutritionist at Public Health England, said: “Children and adults routinely eat too many calories and severe obesity in ten to eleven year olds has reached an all-time high.
“These are early days in the calorie reduction programme but the food industry has a responsibility to act.
Limiting calorie counts of meals to stop obesity is probably the stupidest idea I’ve ever heard.
Calorie counting is in itself a stupid and belligerent way to attempt to lose weight, and I would never recommend it to anyone. Creating a situation where you are hungry all the time is just going to make you miserable, and very few people have the ability to maintain a life strategy which causes misery.
“Dieting” in the sense of going on a temporary program to attempt to lose weight is stupid for that reason.
If someone wants to temporarily alter their diet for the explicit purpose of losing weight, the only reasonable way to do that is to cut carbohydrates. However, if you wanted an entire country to lose weight, you would have to figure out a way to encourage them to focus on health and nutrition as a general lifestyle choice.
If you want to put government regulations on foods, you should ban known poisons, including trans-fats, high-fructose corn syrup and artificial sweeteners. You would also probably want to address the various hormonal problems that are being caused by the various contributors to those problems, including beer, chicken injections and plastics.
There are different types of calories, all calories are not equal in weight.
People do not generally know about nutrition, and when the government talks about it, everything they say is nonsensical. Educating the people would be a primary goal, but they are not capable of educating the people unless they get people who have some basic idea what they’re talking about to advise them.
