A man tragically died after allegedly being beaten with a cricket bat by a gang of youths who reportedly stole his children’s bikes. Derek Whyteside, 42, from Telford, Shropshire, died in hospital after being found unconscious in Withywood Drive, Malinslee, on Monday.
He had allegedly left his home earlier that day in a bid to get back his children’s bicycles. Mr Whyteside’s name was released last night as friends and family paid tribute to him, led by his partner Michelle, with hundreds taking to social media to offer their condolences.
A 16-year-old boy has been charged with murder and appeared before Kidderminster magistrates yesterday. Police have now reassured residents and extra patrols have continued today in the area, close to where the victim died.
Two men arrested in connection with the attack have been released on police bail and a woman and two other teenage boys have been released under investigation.
