A former soldier has been found guilty of battering his wife to death after discovering she was having an affair.

Nirmal Gill, 49, used a metal dumbbell to repeatedly hit Rosemary Gill, 48, around her head in the bedroom of their Bristol home.

The father-of-two admitted manslaughter through a loss of control but denied murdering his wife.

However a jury at Bristol Crown Court unanimously agreed he was guilty after two hours of deliberations.

During the four-week trial, the court was told how a private investigator – hired by Gill – had uncovered his wife was having an affair with her ex-husband.

A tracking device had been fitted to Mrs Gill’s car which regularly sent text updates of her location to her suspicious husband, who followed her in his own and borrowed cars.

In a “revenge” attack at their home in St Werburghs last July, Gill used a dumbbell to strike his wife in the head at least 12 times.

Earlier in the trial prosecutor Michael Fitton QC told the jury: “He was killing her in revenge for what he had discovered about her behaviour because she had been unfaithful.

“He was killing her because he was a jealous man who was never going to forgive her, not just for the affair but for lying to him. She paid for her affair with her life.”

The couple’s 19-year-old daughter Jasmine, who had been sleeping in the next door room, discovered the naked and bloody body of her mother eight hours later.

Gill, a factory worker, claimed he could not remember the fatal event after taking a cocktail of prescription drugs and alcohol.

He will be sentenced on Wednesday.
