WWLTV:

A Jefferson Parish deputy was in critical condition following a shooting in the 5300 block of Douglas Street in Holy Cross, near the intersection of Egania and Douglas streets Tuesday morning.

The deputy, identified as 35-year-old Stephen Arnold, a 12-year veteran of the JPSO, was shot as officers were executing a search warrant at the home. Arnold was shot in the neck, torso and arm during the incident. He is currently listed in critical but stable condition.

Sheriff Newell Normand said Arnold was shot five times, once in the neck and four times in the torso and the arm. Authorities confirm that the suspect in shooting of Deputy Arnold is Jarvis Hardy, who was booked with attempted first-degree murder and narcotics violations.

According to court documents, members of the task force knocked and announced their presence before entering the house. They eventually were able to get into the house by using a battering ram. Arnold led the task force inside the home.

As officers were identifying themselves inside the house, shots came from inside a bedroom, hitting Arnold several times, said the court document. An officer returned fire and Arnold was evacuated from the house.

“As Hardy was being detained following the shooting, Hardy made statements saying he shot because he thought he was being robbed,” said the court document. Police recovered a .40 caliber Smith & Wesson and spent shell casings from the scene.

Hardy’s mother was also inside the home during the raid. She told police she let her son know police were outside and then hid. “She said Hardy is a drug dealer, and she knew police were at her house because of her son. She also knew Hardy had gun and had for protection because he is a drug dealer,” said the court document.

“He is in real serious condition — critical condition,” said Normand. “There appeared a time where he stopped breathing. He is stable at the present time. They operated on him for better than two hours. At this point in time, we’re just praying, praying, praying that neurologically that there’s not any impairment.”

Around 6:10 a.m. the New Orleans Police Department confirmed that “an agent was shot.” Later police said the officer injured was a Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office deputy. Arnold was part of a DEA task force that included NOPD, JPSO, and other federal law enforcement officers.
