The Colombian vet accused of carving open puppies in order to turn them into drug mules could get off with a deal, it was revealed in court Tuesday.
“We’re engaged in plea negotiations,” federal prosecutor Jonathan Lax said as disgraced veterinarian Andres Lopez Elores appeared before Judge Sterling Johnson, sporting a hangdog look.
Elores, a Venezuelan native, is accused of trafficking liquid heroin inside at least 10 live Labrador pups.
The 38-year-old was part of the sick scheme in 2004 and 2005, when he implanted the packets in the puppies’ bellies on behalf of a drug ring, prosecutors charge.
The pooches were then shipped into New York — where the packets were surgically removed, killing the dogs.
Feds later rescued 10 live pups during a 2005 raid in Colombia — six of which were stuffed with 6.6 pounds of heroin.
