One of the three people accused of killing an 86-year-old Chickasaw man, stealing his wedding ring, and selling it for drugs and pizza money, was found guilty on Thursday in Mobile County Circuit Court.
Smith, 20, Carlos Nottingham, 21, and Yasmin Munnerlyn, 20, were charged with burglary and attempted murder charges in connection with the death of Carroll Jordan on Jan. 27, 2014.
Nottingham’s trial is set for March 30, and Munnerlyn pleaded guilty Jan. 21 and received two life sentences.
Smith, Nottingham, and Munnerlyn attacked the elderly man in January 2014 as part of a home invasion, prosecutors said. Jordan, a Korean War veteran, was beaten in the face, choked, and stabbed five times in the back.
He died 12 days later while undergoing surgery for an aneurysm at USA Medical Center.
The attackers tried to steal Jordan’s flat screen television but ditched it in his backyard after roughing him up, according to prosecutors. His wedding ring was also stolen by his attackers and sold at a pawn shop for $40, prosecutors said. The two men and woman used the money to buy pizza and the drug spice.
Mobile County District Attorney Ashley Rich called Jordan a “sweet old man living out the end of his life.”
“He was a kind old man that helped other people,” Rich said. “They preyed on him and that’s what makes this crime so horrific.”
