A Robbins man has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for a beating that left a father of three in a coma until the victim died nearly eight months later in 2011, authorities said.
Harlandez Meals pled guilty to second-degree murder in the fatal beating of Scott Soderland that happened in 2010, in Robbins, according to the Cook County Sheriff’s Office and court records. He was sentenced Thursday by Cook County Markham Branch Court Judge Luciano Panici, according to court records.
Meals, of the 4100 block of West Lincoln Lane, attackied Soderlund outside of Pop’s Liquor Store at 3426 W. 135th Street in Robbins about 9 p.m. July 22, 2010 after Meals went up to Soderlund and they got into a brief argument.
Meals began punching Soderlund, of Midlothian, in the face, hitting him numerous times. Soderlund broke free from Meals and ran west toward Central Park Avenue, but Meals ran down and caught Soderlund at Central Park Avenue and again started punching him in the face, knocking Soderlund to the ground, according to the sheriff’s office.
Meals continued to punch and kick Soderlund in the head as he lay on the ground, until he heard police sirens approaching and ran away.
Soderlund was taken to a local hospital and he ultimately died at Kindred Chicago Central Hospital on March 9, 2011, officials said. The Cook County medical examiner’s office ruled Soderlund’s death from pneumonia and head trauma a homicide.
Soderland left a wife and three children, according to his obituary.
Almost two months after Soderland’s death, Meals was arrested by Cook County Sheriff’s officials.
