Sometimes it looks as though feminism is ultimately going to end in a return to the sexual puritanism that feminism initially allegedly sought to liberate women from.
Which is ironic.
I wonder if they will ever say “it turns out the patriarchy was right”?
Fans of Cosmopolitan will now have a harder time finding the magazine at Walmart.
The retail giant will be pulling the magazine from checkout lines at 5,000 stores across the U.S., the National Center on Sexual Exploitation announced in a news release Tuesday. The organization cited the sexually explicit material — some deemed “pornographic” — published in the magazine amid the #MeToo culture as a reason for the removal.
“This is what real change looks like in our #MeToo culture, and NCOSE is proud to work with a major corporation like Walmart to combat sexually exploitative influences in our society,” said Dawn Hawkins, Executive Director at the National Center on Sexual Exploitation, according to the news release.
“Women, men, and children are bombarded daily with sexually objectifying and explicit materials, not only online, but in the checkout line at the store,” Hawkins continued.
Hawkins equated Cosmopolitan’s messages to that found in Playboy magazine. She said the popular women’s magazine targets young women by placing Disney stars on the cover while publishing “sexually erotic articles.”
“It places women’s value primarily on their ability to sexually satisfy a man and therefore plays into the same culture where men view and treat women as inanimate sex objects,” she added.
Walmart said in a statement to Fox News that they heard the concerns people had about the magazine.
“As with all products in our store, we continue to evaluate our assortment and make changes. Walmart will continue to offer Cosmopolitan to customers that wish to purchase the magazine, but it will no longer be located in the checkout aisles. While this was primarily a business decision, the concerns raised were heard,” the statement read.
So yeah, that sounds exactly like stuff that “moral majority” groups were saying in the sixties and seventies when they first started sexualizing our entire culture.
But if I had to guess, I would say that no, I do not expect there will be an apology to the patriarchy for having been right all along.
