As of time of writing, there is virtually no real new information on the downing of Kogalymavia Flight 9268.
Origianlly, there were reports that the plane had sent out a distress call and a request to land. Yesterday, a single Egyptian official was putting this out for whatever reason, while others didn’t mention it. Update: Now the head of Egyptian aviation is saying no such distress call was sent out.
The pilot’s wife said he had complained about the state of the plane, which probably isn’t of much informational value.
ISIS has not released any proof that they did it, so their claims they did don’t mean anything. They make these claims as routine whenever anything happens anywhere.
Russian investigators are now on the ground in Egypt, and Egypt appears to be genuinely cooperative, even while if it is terrorism, it will presumably be very bad for their tourism industry. They have been downplaying the idea that it is terrorism, while Russia has – quite responsibly – said there was no reason to speculate since nothing is known.
Despite Russia’s relatively horrible plane crash record, the fact remains that plane almost never crash at cruising altitude, and the fact that they did not send out a distress call makes technical malfunction less likely.
The timing is also extremely suspicious.
What Would be the Point?
We also have the question of what the purpose of this would be. If it was just “ISIS,” then that makes sense in terms of motive, but I don’t think they have the capacity to do this. Especially not in Sinai. So they would have to have been assisted by some Western force – probably.
Surely, Russia will know that if it was shot down by “Islamic terrorists,” some Western power would ultimately be responsible, and Western powers know that they would know that. And I don’t really see how shooting down a Russian passenger jet benefits these people at this point.
That, of course, doesn’t mean they wouldn’t do it anyway. We are seeing an incredible incompetence bursting through what was diabolical genius a few decades ago (that is the natural course, I think – at first, corruption is diabolical and effective, and it progressively degrades).
So, The Odds
It is stupid to give speculative odds at this point, when nothing is known, but I’ll go ahead and do it anyway. I think there is a 60-70% chance this was a result of human error and/or technical malfunction. So 30-40% chance it was a plot, either by random Hajis or the Jews.
It is easy to jump all over these things and claim things that may or may not be true. I generally try to avoid that. All the factors put together would make this quite a coincidence. But coincidences do happen.
If you’ve got different odds, or new information to add, let us know.
