What Role are Nationalists Playing in the Ukrainian Revolt?

There are some in nationalist movements who have been critical of my anti-coup position, with regards to the situation in the Ukraine. These people argue that though the revolution is being staged by the Jew Klitschko for the purpose of pushing the Ukraine into the EU, there are nationalists who will somehow (it has not been suggested how) take over by force and install a nationalist government.

Given this, I feel it appropriate to address the role that Ukrainian nationalists are playing in the revolt.

The Guardian claims to have tracked down one of these right-wingers and interviewed them.

The interviewee made the claim that the nationalist force is behind the violence.

Andriy Tarasenko, one of Pravy Sektor’s co-ordinators, agreed to meet the Guardian in a cafe in central Kiev. Wearing a rollneck jumper and with a quiet voice, he seemed a far cry from the warriors on the street, but his message was clear.

“For us, Europe is not an issue, in fact joining with Europe would be the death of Ukraine. Europe means the death of the nation state and the death of Christianity. We want a Ukraine for Ukrainians, run by Ukrainians, and not serving the interests of others.”

Tarasenko said the goal of the group was a “national revolution” that would result in a “national democracy” with none of the trappings of the “totalitarian liberalism” that the EU represents for him.

He also has little time for the trio of opposition politicians who have been the de facto protest leaders, including the former heavyweight boxer Vitali Klitschko. “The only negotiations with [President Viktor] Yanukovych should be about how he gives up power. If any of these leaders were capable of seizing power, they would have done it already.”

Hardcore Ukrainian nationalism is not even the predominant feature of those involved in active clashes with police. Neither of the two people killed by bullets on Wednesday morning were ethnically Ukrainian. But it is clear that the popularity of Pravy Sektor is growing and that many of those lobbing molotov cocktails and preparing for all-out battle are influenced by their ideas.

Tarasenko said it was hard to say how many active members of Pravy Sektor there were, but noted that its page on the social network Vkontakte had more than 50,000 members. On the barricades, “hundreds are quickly turning into thousands”, he claimed.

As the clashes have continued, the international community has continued to put strong pressure on Yanukovych to avoid violence, but in recent days there has also been an acknowledgement of the darker side of the protest movement. A US state department statement issued on Wednesday blamed Yanukovych for the violence but added: “The aggressive actions of members of extreme-right group Pravy Sektor are not acceptable and are inflaming conditions on the streets and undermining the efforts of peaceful protesters.”

But the number of people wielding baseball bats, planks of wood, golf clubs or even hammers has dramatically increased. There have been other disturbing scenes, such as when protesters captured groups of paid-for government thugs earlier in the week, and forced them to speak Ukrainian or sing the national anthem under duress, making videos of them and issuing threats.

The majority of protesters are horrified at the bloodshed and would be satisfied with some kind of compromise agreement, or at least willing to accept it to rule out the chance of further violence.

But Pravy Sektor says that if Yanukovych does not resign, he should be forced out.

“We would give him and his family 24 hours to leave the country, or there would be a revolutionary tribunal,” said Tarasenko. Asked what he thought the most likely medium-term outcome of the clashes would be, he said: “Prolonged guerrilla warfare.”

The problem I have with this is that the Jew boxer is heading the whole operation, and the purpose of the protests, both as perceived by the media and, presumably, the majority of the Ukrainian people, is a desire to join the EU. Thus, it seems to me that even if nationalists are playing a key role in the violence, for purposes other than joining the EU, their efforts are still working toward anti-nationalist goals.

We can also note that the Jew boxer is refusing to acknowledge the nationalists as “bad,” even when pressed, which certainly indicates that they are unknowingly working for his Jewish purposes.

Perhaps, there is a secret plan in the works, and the nationalist force will somehow seize control in the chaos of civil war. That appears to be what nationalists supporting the coup imagine. I just really, really don’t see that happening. I suppose I would likely support it if it did.

What About Ukrainian Nationalism?

The elephant in the room is that Ukrainians, by all analysis, have not proven themselves capable of running a country. They have had more than twenty years now since the fall of the USSR, and have accomplished nothing other than turning their country into a gigantic brothel for Western European sex tourists. Oh, and they are a hub of internet credit card theft.

During my own time in the Ukraine, the only people I saw doing any sort of real work at all were Russians, who not only ran all of the businesses, but served in any position other than that of a low-level service employee.

Most ethnic Ukrainians I saw were involved in serious alcoholism and appeared to be surviving through low-level criminality.

The country is poorer than Moldova – significantly. And they have a proper trade pact with Russia, which Moldova lacks.

Also, there is some question as to how we should define nationalism in this case. The Ukraine has traditionally been a Russian territory, they are genetically almost identical to Russians and they speak a very similar language. On top of this, modern Ukraine is almost half ethnic Russian.

So, although I believe I understand the position of those who view the Ukrainian revolt as positive, I simply cannot agree.

The good news is, we aren’t going to have to wait long to find out. Unless Putin intervenes, which it doesn’t look like he is going to do, the government of the Ukraine is going to fall in the coming days or weeks. If instead of this coup leading to Jew boxer getting his EU wish, and the nationalists somehow secure control of the government – maybe by using hidden reverse-engineered alien technology or a secret army of wizards or something – I will apologize for having doubted the valiant nature of this struggle.
