Two men are in custody by police officers in St. Petersburg after a car chase through city streets. Investigators identified the men as 19-year-old Travonte Brishard Banks and 20-year-old Savon Jamar Hunter.
The pursuit began around 5:15 after a carjacking of 91-year-old Beverly Landrey near 23rd Avenue North and 7th Street North.
Police say Landrey’s Toyota Venza was rear-ended by a stolen Dodge Ram driven by Banks. Landry got out of the car to survey the damage and says one of the men said he was texting and apologized for hitting her. “It was at that very moment that I felt another body go around me, I wasn’t aware of the second person. And the body of the person went around me and got into the driver’s seat.” Said Landrey. “And the door was still open so I got a hold of the handle to pull it to keep it so he wouldn’t drive off and then I reached in and tried to pull him out and he had to have stood to do what he did.” The next thing Landrey knew, she was laying in the middle of the roadway, crying for help.
Banks is charged with carjacking, aggravated fleeing and eluding, four counts of leaving the scene of an accident, resisting arrest without violence and threatening a public official. Investigators say Hunter was the passenger and is charged with two counts of violation of probation for robbery, and resisting arrest without violence. They say Hunter’s involvement with the carjacking is still under investigation.
A neighbor near the car jacking scene rushed to help the victim.
“Took her purse. Took her car. Two people, two trucks I mean, 91-years old,” said Louise Boyd. “And that doesn’t happen, that doesn’t happen here. And I just hope she’s OK.”
Landrey was taken to the hospital. Police say she suffered only minor cuts and contusions, and was released later Thursday night.
Police say four accidents occurred during the pursuit, which lasted around 30 minutes.
Banks struck other vehicles at 901 22 Avenue South, at the corner of Ivanhoe Drive and Martin Luther King Jr Street South, and near the corner of 18th Avenue South and 16th Street. St. Petersburg Police say no police vehicles were involved in any collisions during the pursuit.
Investigators say the two suspects abandoned the vehicle around 5:45 p.m. in the 800 block of Paris Avenue South and ran between the houses. Officers sealed off the area, and arrested the two men.
Police are defending the pursuit, saying it was done with a Pinellas Sheriff’s helicopter in the air, and a lieutenant monitoring the situation.
“The reason we pursued this vehicle is clearly that they had attacked an elderly woman, caused her injuries, carjacked her from her vehicle. That constituted a violent felony,” said Mike Puetz with the St. Petersburg Police Department.
The stolen truck that was initially used to strike the carjacking victim’s vehicle has not yet been recovered. The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office is currently searching for a 2002 silver Dodge Ram 1500 with a FL tag of C887BI.
Landrey says when she was in Paris, a man tried stealing her purse. She ran after the man, and in her words, pummeled him, and took her purse back. She says yesterday, she felt the same way. “You don’t know what you’re doing. You know that you want what’s yours. And they’re not going to get it. And, there you are. ” Said Landrey. “And you don’t give up. But he got the best of me, God.”
