Cody Spoon was shot by an enraged savage while attending to a domestic violence call out.

Marshall County deputy Cody Spoon is recovering after he was shot on-duty in Lamar, Mississippi.

According to the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were responding to a domestic violence call around 12:30 a.m. at a house on Winding Creek Road.

Marshall County Sheriff Kenny Dickerson says the suspect, Mardaniyn Sellers, was in a domestic situation with his wife.

When deputies arrived on the scene, Sellers walked halfway down his driveway with a high powered deer rifle, then put the gun down on a pick up truck and walked towards the officers. Then, the deputies and Sellers got into an altercation. Sellers picked up the gun and shot Spoon.

“These domestic violence calls are the most dangerous calls a law enforcement officer can make,” said Sheriff Dickerson.

Sellers claims that the officers shot first and he shot back. Deputies have not confirmed that information.

Its an unfortunate situation, Mardaniyn Sellers just couldn’t help pulling the trigger.

“It’s an unfortunate situation. It’s shocking,” said neighbor Amber Partee. “I did hear a boom or some type of noise and then all of a sudden we just saw lights and sirens.”

Marshall County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Dave Cook says their deputies have responded to Sellers’ house at least six times since 2009.

Dickerson said he knew the suspect personally and considered him a friend.

Spoon, a K9 officer who has been with the sheriff’s office since January 2012, was shot in the upper arm and was taken to the hospital in stable condition. He is expected to recover.

“The officer had surgery and he’s doing pretty good,” said Dickerson. “I understand he’s going to need several more surgeries in the future.”

On Facebook, Spoon’s brother wrote, “Looking at him now and he is doing great. Happy things aren’t worse. Wouldn’t know what to do.”
